How to use cuttlebones for parrots

Place a piece securely in your bird’s cage using a suitable holder, where your bird can reach it comfortably. Then, allow your bird to peck at it as needed alongside a balanced, species-appropriate diet and fresh drinking water. Also, check its condition regularly and replace soiled pieces. Between uses, store unused cuttlebones in a cool, dry place away from moisture.

However, cuttlebone is a complementary item; it does not replace regular food. For general feeding guidance, read the RSPCA’s advice on pet bird diets. Browse our bird food and supplies for everyday essentials.

Frequently asked questions

How many pieces will I receive?
One pack contains four cuttlebones. Therefore, ordering two packs gives you eight pieces.

Are all pieces exactly the same size?
No. Shape, thickness and colour vary naturally. For this reason, the dimensions are approximate and describe each piece, rather than the outer packaging.

Does it replace my parrot’s food?
No. Instead, offer it alongside your bird’s usual balanced diet. If in doubt, ask an avian veterinarian if you are unsure about your bird’s individual calcium needs.
